Descend into the Colosseum's underground chambers and stand on a reconstructed arena floor with an archaeologist-guide, off-limits to general visitors.
What to expect
You'll pass beneath the arena into the hypogeum, the network of tunnels where gladiators and animals once waited before combat. Your guide explains the pulley systems that raised beasts into the arena and the layout of ancient spectacle logistics. From there you continue to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, seeing the ruins as a continuous story rather than isolated sites.
Good to know
Underground access sells out weeks in advance in peak season; from Civitavecchia port, allow at least 90 minutes of transfer each way.
