Hike through peat bogs and wind-sculpted lenga-beech forest to a breathtaking emerald-green glacial lake — one of Patagonia's most photogenic hidden gems, virtually unknown to mass tourism. A private guide turns every step into a lesson in Fuegian ecology.
What to expect
Your guide leads you across a wooden boardwalk over quaking peat bogs before the trail climbs gently into primeval beech forest draped in old-man's-beard lichen. After roughly 90 minutes of moderate hiking the trees part to reveal Laguna Esmeralda — a glacier-fed lake of impossible turquoise set against a wall of hanging ice and granite. You'll pause here for a hot Thermos of mate and medialunas as the glacier calves quietly overhead. The return through forest feels entirely different in the afternoon light.
