Sail across the fabled Strait of Magellan to Isla Magdalena, home to over 120,000 Magellanic penguins — one of the densest colonies in South America. Walk freely among thousands of waddling birds utterly unbothered by human presence.
What to expect
Board a dedicated expedition vessel at Punta Arenas port and cross the legendary Strait of Magellan — the same waters Magellan himself navigated in 1520. The 90-minute crossing delivers spectacular sea views and frequent dolphin and seabird sightings. On Magdalena, a marked trail winds through the colony where penguins nest right at your feet; a CONAF ranger provides fascinating ecological commentary. The return journey at golden-hour light is simply magical.
Good to know
Tours run approximately 4–5 hours total; departures are weather-dependent on the strait. Book direct well in advance for the November–March nesting season. Dress in warm, windproof layers — the strait can be brisk even in summer.
