Punta Tombo hosts the largest Magellanic penguin colony in South America — half a million birds. A private guided excursion places you on the boardwalk trails at the colony's quietest hours, walking shoulder-to-shoulder with penguins in their nesting burrows.
What to expect
The 180 km drive south from Puerto Madryn crosses open Patagonian steppe — guanacos, maras (Patagonian hares) and Darwin's rheas dot the roadside. At the reserve, marked paths wind directly through the nesting colony: penguins waddle past your feet, completely unafraid. Your guide narrates breeding cycles and points out chick-feeding moments. A box lunch on the coast with Atlantic views rounds off the morning before the return drive.
Good to know
Allow 7–8 hours door-to-door — verify against your all-aboard time carefully. Penguin colony is active September through March (breeding season at its peak October–November). Park entrance is included in the quoted price. Direct booking via Madryn Travel locks in the guide and vehicle; walk-ins are not accepted at the reserve gate without pre-payment.
