Playa El Doradillo is one of the only places on Earth where southern right whales come within metres of the beach to play in the shallows. Stand on the gravel shore and watch 40-tonne giants surface, breach, and spy-hop in waist-deep water — no boat required.
What to expect
The drive north from Puerto Madryn to Doradillo takes just 15 minutes, arriving at a wild gravel beach facing the open gulf. Between June and December, southern right whale mothers bring their calves into the shallows to rest and socialise — at times you can hear them exhaling before you see them. Your guide walks the beach with you, identifying individual whales by their callosities (the rough skin patches unique to each animal) and narrating their biology. The panoramic Patagonian steppe backdrop — vast skies, ochre cliffs, zero crowds — makes for an elemental, utterly memorable experience.
Good to know
Strictly seasonal: June through December, with July–October being the prime window. Allow 3 hours total including transfer. Combine with the Ecocentro (just 10 minutes south) for a perfect half-day pairing. Wear layers and wind-resistant clothing — the beach is exposed. No park fee required. Book the guided transfer via Madryn Travel to ensure the guide knows current whale positions along the beach.
