Slip into the crystal-clear waters of Lovers Cove, Avalon's protected marine reserve, and come face-to-face with leopard sharks, garibaldi (California's brilliant state marine fish), and forests of kelp. A world-class snorkel haven steps from the harbor.
What to expect
Just a short, scenic walk east along the harbor from the tender pier, Lovers Cove is enclosed by rocky headlands that shelter an astonishing concentration of sea life. Don a mask and fins and within moments you're gliding alongside curious garibaldi — vivid tangerine-colored fish found nowhere else — while leopard sharks rest lazily on the sandy bottom below. Kelp canopies sway overhead, bat rays cruise past, and bright reef fish dart through the rocks. For those who prefer to stay dry, a transparent-hulled kayak delivers an equally mesmerizing window into this undersea garden. Water temperatures are mild and the cove is calm, making this accessible and spectacular for all fitness levels.
Good to know
Arrive early — the cove is open to day visitors and fills up on busy cruise days. Gear rental is available right at the beach. Bring or purchase reef-safe sunscreen only (marine preserve rules). The walk from the tender dock takes under 15 minutes. Leave at least 90 minutes before all-aboard to shower, change, and stroll back.
