Venture deep into Catalina's protected backcountry — 88% of the island is wild, rugged nature reserve — on an expert-led open Jeep safari. Spot free-roaming bison, island fox, and golden eagles in a landscape most visitors never see.
What to expect
Your open-air Jeep departs Avalon and almost immediately the golf-cart civilization falls away, replaced by rolling chaparral ridgelines, sweeping Pacific panoramas, and the silence of one of California's most pristine nature reserves. Your Conservancy naturalist narrates the ecology, geology, and extraordinary history of each canyon and peak — including the remarkable story of how a herd of American bison ended up marooned on a Channel Island. Encounter these magnificent animals at close range, watch island foxes trot across the trail, and scan the skies for raptors. The views from the island's high ridges — both Pacific coasts visible on clear days — are simply staggering.
Good to know
Book directly at catalinaconservancy.org as far in advance as possible — tour capacity is intentionally small to protect the ecosystem, and cruise-day departures fill within hours of booking opening. Tours typically run 2–4 hours; confirm your specific tour duration against your all-aboard time. Wear layers — ridge temperatures can be 10°F cooler than the harbor. Closed-toe shoes strongly recommended.
