Step inside one of the most extravagant private estates ever built on the Riviera — the rose-pink Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on Cap Ferrat — and explore nine themed gardens cascading down to the sea on both sides of the peninsula.
What to expect
A short taxi ride (10 minutes) from Villefranche delivers you to one of the peninsula's crown jewels: a Venetian-Florentine palazzo built by Béatrice de Rothschild between 1905 and 1912. Inside, original Sèvres porcelain, Fragonard paintings, and Flemish tapestries fill room after gilded room. Outside, nine distinct gardens — French formal, Florentine, Japanese, Provençal, and more — terrace down toward St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat village. The fountain garden 'dances' to classical music every 20 minutes: pure theatre. The tearoom overlooking the bay is perfect for a champagne break.
Good to know
Open daily; pre-purchase timed-entry tickets on the official website to avoid queues. Allow 2–2.5 hours. Combine with a stroll down to Cap Ferrat village (15 min on foot) for lunch before returning to Villefranche. Taxis back are plentiful from the village stand.
