Journey south through the Satsuma countryside to Chiran — Japan's finest intact samurai town — then pay solemn respects at the Chiran Peace Museum, home to the world's most significant collection of kamikaze pilot artefacts and letters.
What to expect
Seven centuries of samurai culture are preserved along Chiran's 700-metre main street, where seven immaculate clan gardens (all registered Special Places of Scenic Beauty) cascade behind white-walled residences. Your guide interprets the dry-stone garden compositions — each a microcosm of Japanese aesthetics. At the Peace Museum, personal letters, photographs and flight suits of the young tokko (special attack) pilots create a profoundly affecting experience; your guide provides essential historical context. The drive through tea fields and cedar forests is scenic in its own right.
