Stand atop Nihondaira — the summit voted Japan's most beautiful viewpoint — and look out over Suruga Bay, Mt. Fuji, and the Izu Peninsula, then walk the ancient pine grove of Miho-no-Matsubara, a UNESCO World Heritage shore of ethereal beauty.
What to expect
The Nihondaira Yume Terrace's dramatic cantilevered observation deck delivers a 360-degree panorama that stops even seasoned travellers in their tracks — Fuji to the north, the Pacific to the south, and Shimizu's bay sparkling below. A short ropeway descends to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine if time allows. Then your driver takes you to Miho-no-Matsubara, where 30,000 ancient pine trees line a curved white-sand shore, the air scented with salt and resin. Mt. Fuji rises above the blue bay beyond the pines — the scene immortalised in countless woodblock prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige.
Good to know
Both sites are within 20–40 minutes of Shimizu Port, making this ideal for half-day or flexible itineraries. Miho-no-Matsubara is a UNESCO World Heritage component of the 'Fujisan' inscription — bring a camera and allow time to walk its full length. The Yume Terrace is best visited early morning before haze develops.
