Hike to the vertiginous, long-deserted mountain farm of Skageflå, perched 250 m above the fjord on a ledge so narrow it defies belief — a living relic of Norwegian hardship and ingenuity with the most cinematic fjord view you will ever earn on foot.
What to expect
Take a fjord ferry to the Homlong landing stage, then follow a well-marked trail that rises steeply through birch forest before emerging onto the Skageflå shelf. The whitewashed farmhouses stand exactly as they were when the last family left in 1916 — hay barns, stone walls and a tiny schoolhouse intact. Sit on the farmhouse step and absorb an unobstructed, eagle-level view across the full width of Geirangerfjord. The descent rewards with wildflower meadows cascading to the water's edge. Allow 3–4 hrs including the ferry.
Good to know
The trail is rated moderate — good grip footwear essential. The ferry from Geiranger pier runs several times daily; the first departure suits cruise passengers best. Pre-book the guided option to secure a knowledgeable English-speaking local. Return to ship with comfortable time for a 3 pm all-aboard.
