Walk the very fields, church and inn where Van Gogh spent his last 70 days and painted over 80 canvases. Auvers-sur-Oise is one of the most emotionally resonant art pilgrimages in Europe — and it lies just 20 km from Conflans along the Oise river.
What to expect
Your expert guide leads you first to the Auberge Ravoux, where you ascend to the tiny attic room in which Van Gogh died — a place of extraordinary stillness. The walk then follows a self-guided 'Van Gogh circuit' through the village, pausing at painted viewpoints where reproductions of the original canvases are mounted beside the living landscapes that inspired them. The Gothic church of Notre-Dame d'Auvers, immortalised in one of his most famous works, is the emotional centrepiece. Lunch at the Auberge Ravoux's atmospheric restaurant — serving traditional French cuisine in the very room where Vincent dined — makes the experience complete.
