Descend into the spectacular limestone caverns of Cerdon, carved by a prehistoric river, then surface to taste the celebrated Cerdon du Bugey — a rare, naturally sparkling rosé made only in this valley. A sublime combination of geology and gastronomy.
What to expect
A 45-minute guided walk takes you through vaulted limestone chambers adorned with stalactites and ancient river-carved galleries, the temperature a refreshing 13°C year-round. Emerging back into the Ain countryside, you move to a local cave coopérative or domaine to taste Cerdon du Bugey — a low-alcohol, delicately sweet sparkling rosé produced by the méthode ancestrale and beloved by Lyon's finest restaurants. The drive through the Ain gorges en route is itself spectacular. The whole experience runs a very manageable half-day, leaving you time to return to port at ease.
Good to know
Cerdon is approximately 35–40 minutes by car from Bourg-en-Bresse; arrange a private car or taxi. Self-guided cave visits run every 45–60 minutes; pre-booking online is strongly advised in summer. Bring a light layer — the caves are cool.
