Enter the world's first jaguar preserve — Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary — on a private guided trek through ancient rainforest where tapir, pumas, and over 300 bird species roam. An utterly rare wildlife immersion.
What to expect
Transfer by private vehicle (~45 min from Placencia ferry) into the Maya Mountains and enter Cockscomb at dawn when wildlife is most active. Your expert guide leads you along river trails beneath a cathedral canopy of cohune palms and ceiba trees, pausing to identify tracks, medicinal plants, and troops of howler monkeys overhead. Cool off with a natural swim in a crystal jungle pool. Though jaguars are elusive, the resident wildlife, ancient-forest atmosphere, and expert narration make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Good to know
Take the ferry to Placencia first (~USD 20–25 pp round-trip), then arrange a private vehicle transfer. Wear long sleeves, closed shoes, and insect repellent. Start early — depart Harvest Caye by 8 am — to complete the trek and return before all-aboard. Pre-book your private guide through a Placencia-based operator.
