Step back 300 years on coral-walled Taketomi Island — 10 minutes by ferry — riding a traditional water-buffalo rickshaw through lanes of bougainvillea and star-sand beaches, then sit with a master weaver at a Minsa textile atelier. A living time capsule.
What to expect
The ferry from Ishigaki takes just 10 minutes, depositing you on an island where the loudest sound is the clip of buffalo hooves on coral-stone paths. Your driver-singer narrates in lilting Japanese and English, pausing at the lookout tower for sweeping views over Kondoi Beach and its famous star-shaped sand. Afterwards, at a heritage textile studio, an Okinawan artisan guides your hands on a backstrap loom to create an inch of authentic Minsa fabric — yours to keep. The return ferry leaves plenty of time before all-aboard.
