Explore the world-famous Otaru Orgel (Music Box Museum), home to thousands of hand-crafted mechanical music boxes, then tour the grand Nishin Goten Herring Mansion — a window into the extraordinary wealth of Hokkaido's 19th-century herring boom.
What to expect
The Orgel main hall is a three-storey Victorian-style building filled with the delicate tinkling of hundreds of mechanical music boxes, from pocket-sized antiques to elaborate concert-hall instruments. Upstairs, skilled craftsmen assemble custom pieces to order. A short drive along the coast brings you to the Nishin Goten, a vast wooden estate that once housed the tycoons of Hokkaido's herring industry, its rooms still furnished with lacquerwork, sliding screens, and sea-facing gardens.
Good to know
The Music Box Museum is a 10-minute walk from the cruise pier; Nishin Goten is a 10-minute taxi or 30-minute walk further along the coastal road. Budget 3–4 hours for both. Commission a custom music box at the start of the tour so it's ready for collection before you return to ship.
