Otaru Aquarium's resident penguins famously parade along a seaside walkway every day — one of Japan's most charming wildlife moments — while its open-air pools feature performing sea lions and walruses against a backdrop of the Japan Sea.
What to expect
The outdoor sea-lion stadium delivers theatrical performances against crashing waves. Then, at the appointed hour, a keeper leads a waddling procession of penguins along the seaside path — endlessly photogenic and joyfully unhurried. Inside, tanks showcase the extraordinary marine life of the Sea of Okhotsk, including giant king crabs, giant Pacific octopuses, and Steller sea lions. A café serves fresh Hokkaido soft-serve overlooking the sea.
Good to know
The aquarium is approximately 4 km (15 min by taxi) north of the cruise pier. Allow 2.5–3 hours. Penguin parade and show times vary seasonally — check the official site before visiting and plan your arrival around the parade time. Combine with a stop at Sankaku Market for fresh Hokkaido uni and crab on the way back.
