Step inside 10,000 years of Tlingit and Stikine culture on an intimate, story-rich walking tour led by Wrangell's most knowledgeable local guides — from the ancient Chief Shakes Tribal House to the town's layered colonial and gold-rush history.
What to expect
Your guide meets you dockside and leads you along the waterfront to Chief Shakes Island, where you enter the beautifully restored Tribal House — one of the finest clan houses in Southeast Alaska — and hear the living history of the Shtax'héen Kwáan people. The route continues to Wrangell Museum (admission included in most packages) for artefacts, petroglyphs, and gold-rush relics, then through town to key heritage sites. Expect candid, unhurried storytelling rather than a scripted lecture.
Good to know
Tours run approximately 2–2.5 hours and operate comfortably within short port calls. Chief Shakes Tribal House has limited-capacity entry; your guide ensures priority access. Wrangell Museum standalone admission is USD 12 out-of-state if visiting independently. Comfortable walking shoes recommended; the route is mostly flat.
