Ascend the 1807 Portland Observatory — the last surviving maritime signal tower in the US — for a sweeping panorama of Casco Bay, the White Mountains, and the city below, guided by a specialist historian.
What to expect
Climb 103 steps through the 19th-century octagonal tower, built by Captain Lemuel Moody to spot incoming merchant ships and signal their arrival to the commercial district below. Your expert guide brings the tower to life with tales of the merchants, sailors, and civic leaders who shaped Portland's golden age of trade. The lantern room rewards you with one of the finest panoramic views in all of New England — ocean, islands, and mountains in every direction. The surrounding Munjoy Hill neighborhood is itself a beautifully preserved slice of Victorian Portland.
Good to know
Tower tours run seasonally (late May–October); check the schedule online. A 10-minute walk or quick rideshare from the cruise terminal. The climb involves steep, narrow stairs — not suitable for those with mobility limitations. Arrive early as tours fill up on busy port days.
