Glide through the waters of the Juan Fernández Archipelago National Park at dawn, scanning for Juan Fernández petrels, Más Afuera petrels, and other ultra-rare endemic seabirds found nowhere else on the planet.
What to expect
You depart at first light on a small zodiac-style vessel, moving quietly through the park's protected marine zone. An expert ornithologist identifies species in real time as they wheel and dive around the boat. Fur seals hauled out on sea stacks are a near-certainty, and dolphins frequently escort the bow. The morning light on the volcanic cliffs is spectacular for photography.
Good to know
Morning departures are essential to catch peak bird activity — confirm exact timing with the operator on arrival. Bring a telephoto lens, sea-sickness remedy if needed, and a windproof layer. Numbers are strictly limited to preserve the wildlife experience.
