Step into the world of Tahitian black pearls at one of Rangiroa's most celebrated pearl farms, learning how the legendary 'gem of the gods' is cultured from the live Pinctada margaritifera oyster. This is a rare behind-the-scenes encounter with a living art form.
What to expect
A short boat transfer brings you to a floating farm where rows of pearl-bearing oysters hang in the clear lagoon. The pearl farmer opens oysters one by one, explaining the two-year grafting process and the role of the atoll's pristine water in producing Rangiroa's unusually lustrous gems. You're invited to hold a freshly harvested pearl — still warm from the oyster — and compare colours from pure black to peacock green and aubergine. The farm boutique sells certified, unresold pearls at authentic prices.
Good to know
Best visited in the late morning when the light is ideal for appraising pearl colour. Pairs well with a morning drift snorkel or a Blue Lagoon tour — ask to combine visits. If you intend to purchase, bring a budget: genuine Rangiroa black pearls are an investment piece and excellent value bought direct from the farm.
