Hike to St. Paul's Pool, a breathtaking natural tidal pool carved into Pitcairn's volcanic coastline, filled with crystal-clear Pacific water and ringed by dramatic black lava rock. One of the South Pacific's most beautiful natural formations — and almost no one has ever seen it.
What to expect
The hike traverses rugged coastal terrain past ancient rock formations and native flora found nowhere else on Earth. Arriving at St. Paul's Pool, you're greeted by a luminous basin of turquoise Pacific water, perfectly still when the tide permits. The surrounding lava shelves make extraordinary natural seating for taking it all in. Snorkelling within the pool (at low tide, with guide approval) reveals vibrant marine life in gin-clear water. The scene is genuinely otherworldly.
Good to know
Tide timing is critical — visit only at low to mid tide; incoming tides make the pool dangerous. Your island guide will advise on the day's safe window. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes with grip are essential. The hike is moderately challenging; allow 90 minutes return from Adamstown. Bring sun protection and water.
