Trek Pitcairn's legendary Eco Trail through lush subtropical forest to Christian's Cave — the clifftop lookout where Fletcher Christian himself retreated to watch for Royal Navy ships — and Sailors' Hide, a dramatic vantage point used by the mutineers as a secret refuge. History and wilderness in one extraordinary walk.
What to expect
The trail plunges into Pitcairn's interior forest — dense, green, and alive with endemic birdlife and botanical rarities. Your guide names every plant by its Pitcairn-English name and explains its historical use by the original settlers. Reaching Christian's Cave, the clifftop opens to a sweeping 270-degree view of the Pacific — utterly vast and humbling. Sailors' Hide, nearby, is a natural rock shelter used as a concealed lookout. The silence up here is total.
Good to know
The Eco Trail requires a local guide — do not attempt independently. Wear long trousers (vegetation can scratch), sturdy hiking shoes, and bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person. Allow 2–3 hours for the full trail. Factor this against your all-aboard time carefully — it is the most time-intensive excursion on island. Best undertaken in the morning before midday heat.
