Paddle an authentic va'a (outrigger canoe) into the outer reef with master fishermen who still use ancestral techniques — hand-lining over coral heads and reading the sea the way their great-grandparents taught them. Rare, living cultural immersion.
What to expect
You'll help launch the hand-carved outrigger at dawn and paddle to the outer reef edge, feeling the surge of open ocean against the hull. The fishermen demonstrate hand-lining and the ancient pa'a (trap) method, encouraging you to try both. Whatever is caught — parrotfish, surgeonfish, small tuna — is cleaned, marinated in coconut cream, and cooked over a driftwood fire on a nearby motu for a feast that is wholly earned. The paddle back is leisurely, with time for a final swim.
Good to know
Departs 07:00; returns by 13:00, well ahead of all-aboard. Wear a rash guard — the canoe offers no shade on the outer reef. Bring cash in XPF for gratuity; these fishermen-guides are not used to card readers. Arrange through the Tuamotu-Gambier Tourism Committee or the port agent at least 3 days in advance.
