Paddle a sea kayak through the mirror-still lagoon of Ducie Atoll — one of the most isolated specks of land on Earth — with a knowledgeable local guide narrating the ecology of this extraordinary place. Fewer people have done this than have summited Everest.
What to expect
Launching from the Zodiac landing point, you paddle along the inner rim of the atoll where frigatebirds and red-tailed tropicbirds wheel overhead in their thousands. The guide identifies nesting colonies of Murphy's petrel — one of the densest in the Pacific — as you glide past bleached sand islets. The lagoon's absolute calm makes paddling effortless, leaving you free to absorb the raw, end-of-the-world atmosphere. A mid-expedition pause on a sandbar for refreshments is pure luxury solitude.
Good to know
Kayaking is weather and sea-state dependent; Ducie's southern exposure means conditions can change quickly. Confirm with your expedition coordinator the evening before. All paddle equipment is provided. Dehydration risk is high under the tropical sun — carry at least 1.5 litres of water. Factor in tender transit time when calculating return to the ship.
