Stand on the very island where Kokichi Mikimoto created the world's first cultured pearl in 1893. Watch white-robed Ama women free-dive for oysters, then access the museum and jewellery house at your own luxurious pace.
What to expect
Cross the small bridge from central Toba onto the island and enter a world of oyster-laden floating rafts and pearl-sorting workshops. The highlight is the Ama demonstration: robed divers plunge into the bay without equipment, surfacing with oysters as they have for centuries. Inside the museum, trace the full arc from grain of sand to finished strand, and see historic ceremonial pieces including a pearl-encrusted replica of the Liberty Bell. Browse the flagship Mikimoto boutique for pieces unavailable elsewhere.
Good to know
Mikimoto Pearl Island is a 5-minute walk from Toba Station and about 10 minutes by taxi from the pier. Ama dive shows run at 10:00, 11:30, and 14:00 — time your visit around a show. The island can be done in 1.5–2 hours, leaving time to pair it with Toba Aquarium nearby.
