Walk the epicentre of 6 August 1945 with a Hiroshima Peace Volunteer guide through the Park and Museum, then stand face-to-face with the Atomic Bomb Dome — the only structure left standing at the hypocentre. Profoundly moving and utterly irreplaceable.
What to expect
Certified Hiroshima Peace Volunteers lead a 90-minute English walking tour of the Peace Memorial Park, pausing at each monument to explain its significance with striking personal anecdotes and historical precision. Inside the museum, the East Building's timeline and West Building's human-scale testimonies — melted watches stopped at 8:15 a.m., a child's scorched tricycle — are given meaning far beyond what signage alone conveys. The reconstructed Atomic Bomb Dome, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is approached last, its skeletal iron dome reflected in the Motoyasu River — a moment of absolute stillness. Allow a minimum of three to four hours for the full experience.
Good to know
Peace Volunteer tours depart from the museum front at set times (typically 10:00 & 14:00); no advance booking required but arrive early. Museum opens 08:30 (Mar–Jul & Sep–Nov), 08:00 (Aug). Closed the last Mon of Dec. From the cruise port, take the Hiroshima Electric Railway (tram) to Genbaku-dome-mae — approx. 30–40 min, JPY 190. Allow ample buffer before all-aboard.
