Learn to make Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki — the city's beloved layered savoury pancake, wildly different from Osaka's version — in a hands-on class at Okonomi-mura, the legendary three-storey 'village' of 25 competing family stalls that has fed locals since 1945.
What to expect
Your class begins with a briefing on how Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki differs from all others — the layers of cabbage, pork belly, yakisoba noodles and egg are built on a flat teppan griddle with the precision of a craft. Under a local chef's guidance, you master the technique yourself, flipping and layering until your own perfect version is ready to eat. The class wraps with sake or Japanese craft beer pairing and recommendations for the city's best street-food. Afterwards, Okonomi-mura's atmospheric stalls — each a tiny, smoky theatre of cast-iron — beckon for a second course or a Hiroshima lemon chuhai.
Good to know
Classes are small-group (typically 6–10 people) and run in English; book at least 2 weeks ahead as they sell out on port days. Okonomi-mura is in central Hiroshima — a 10-min tram ride from the Peace Park area. The experience takes 2–2.5 hours, making it an ideal complement to a morning at the Peace Memorial. Vegetarian and gluten-free adaptations available on request.
