Hike the legendary Ripple Rock Trail in Elk Falls Provincial Park to a dramatic cliff-top viewpoint directly above Seymour Narrows — the site of the 1958 blast that removed a navigational hazard responsible for over 100 shipwrecks and 114 lives. A hike where every step is steeped in maritime drama.
What to expect
The 9 km round-trip trail winds through cathedral-like second-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar before opening onto a vertiginous viewpoint 40 metres above the churning narrows. Your guide unpacks the extraordinary engineering feat of tunnelling under the seabed to plant 1,375 tonnes of explosive beneath Ripple Rock. The roar of tidal currents far below is constant, and on a running tide you'll watch the water boil and eddy with mesmerising power. Wildlife sightings — harbour porpoise, eagles, black bears on the far shore — are a near-daily occurrence.
Good to know
Trail is 9 km / 3–4 hours; moderate fitness required. Wear sturdy waterproof boots and layers — the exposed viewpoint can be 5–8°C cooler than town. Trailhead is a 20-minute drive from Campbell River pier; guide includes transport. Confirm all-aboard time with guide — factor a 30-minute buffer.
