Step inside the working studio where Tlingit master carvers shape monumental totem poles from raw Alaska cedar, carrying forward a tradition that defines Northwest Coast art. Private access with direct conversation with the carvers elevates this far beyond any museum visit.
What to expect
The Carving Shed sits adjacent to the Totem Park and functions as a fully active atelier, not a demonstration space for tourists. Depending on commissions in progress, you may find carvers working on anything from a 30-foot mortuary pole to a ceremonial feast dish. The smell of fresh cedar fills the space as adzes ring against wood. Carvers welcome thoughtful questions and speak candidly about the cultural resurgence driving new commissions across Alaska. Photographs are welcome with permission — many guests leave with a small carved piece purchased directly from the artist.
Good to know
Hours are not guaranteed — the Shed operates on carving schedules, not tourist schedules. A local guide ensures access and context. Combine with the Totem Park walk (same loop, ~2 hours total). Cash or card welcomed for direct artist purchases.
