Stroll the legendary Kairakuen, one of Japan's three greatest gardens, where over 3,000 plum trees create a fragrant, painterly landscape steeped in Edo-period elegance. A private expert guide brings the history of Lord Nariaki's vision to life in intimate detail.
What to expect
Enter through the bamboo groves that frame the garden's historic gateway and step into a landscape unchanged since 1842. Your guide narrates the philosophy of Lord Tokugawa Nariaki, who designed Kairakuen to be open to all — a radical idea in feudal Japan. In plum blossom season (late February–March), the air is intoxicating; in other seasons, the ancient cedars and curated groves offer serene beauty. A short walk leads to the adjacent Senba Lake for panoramic reflections.
Good to know
Kairakuen is approximately 30 minutes from Hitachinaka Port by private car. Garden entry is JPY 300 (approx. USD 2) during plum blossom festival; free at other times. The Kodokan school, a UNESCO candidate site, is adjacent and highly recommended as an add-on. Confirm all-aboard time with your ship and plan for a 4–5 hour excursion total.
