Descend the iconic wooden ladder into To Sua — 'The Big Hole' — a 30-metre-deep ocean trench in Samoa filled with crystalline seawater and connected to the sea by a lava tube. At sunrise, with only your private guide, the turquoise water is entirely yours.
What to expect
You arrive as golden light catches the lip of the trench, the water below shifting from cobalt to jade. Your guide walks you through the volcanic lava shelf, pausing at blowholes that explode with each surge. The ladder descent is exhilarating — 30 rungs into a cathedral of rock and light. The water is calm, clear, and cool, and you swim in near-silence. The return walk through the manicured tropical gardens is a meditative counterpoint to the raw geology.
Good to know
Samoa sits just west of the IDL — the island famously moved to the western side in 2011, effectively skipping a day. Your guide will explain this with local wit. The trench ladder requires a moderate level of fitness and confidence with heights. Water shoes recommended. Confirm ship docking at Apia; transfer is approximately 45 minutes each way — allow a full morning.
