Before the public arrives, experience the Nebuta Museum's colossal illuminated festival floats in near-silence, then try your hand at the traditional washi-paper and wire craft that creates them — a deeply intimate encounter with Aomori's soul.
What to expect
The museum sits steps from the cruise terminal, making it the most time-efficient bucket-list experience in port. Inside, five towering Nebuta floats — some over 5 metres tall, blazing with painted warriors and mythological beasts — fill the darkened hall with a theatrical glow. A cultural interpreter explains the 300-year history of the Nebuta Matsuri, one of Japan's Top 3 festivals. In the workshop area, you shape wire, layer washi paper, and paint a miniature float panel to take home as a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
Good to know
The museum is a 5-minute walk from the port — ideal if time is short. Open 9:00–18:00 (May–Aug); 9:00–17:00 (Sep–Apr). Workshop sessions should be booked directly with the museum at least 2 weeks ahead. Allow 2–3 hours for entry + workshop combined.
