Board a small, expert-crewed vessel to seek out drifting icebergs calved from Greenland glaciers and humpback whales feeding in Iceberg Alley — one of the planet's great wildlife spectacles, right off St. John's harbour.
What to expect
Departing from the historic St. John's harbour, your captain — a seasoned marine naturalist — reads the sea for humpbacks, minke whales, and the ghostly blue-white towers of icebergs drifting south on the Labrador Current. In peak season (May–July) it's common to drift alongside 10,000-year-old ice the size of a townhouse while humpbacks breach just metres away. Puffins and gannets wheel overhead, adding to the sense of otherworldly abundance. Hot beverages and local expertise are on board throughout.
Good to know
Iceberg season peaks May–early July; whales are most active June–September. Departure is from Harbour Drive, walking distance from the cruise pier. Dress in serious warm layers regardless of air temperature — the Labrador Current makes it cold at sea. Book private charters well ahead.
