Glide above the ancient peaks of Seoraksan on the iconic Seorak Cable Car, then find Korea's legendary 'rocking stone' — a 5-tonne boulder that wobbles at a touch yet has never fallen. Dramatic scenery, zero strenuous hiking required.
What to expect
The eight-minute cable car ascent lifts you 1,100 m above sea level, the valley floor dropping away beneath you to reveal a sea of jagged granite ridgelines stretching to the horizon. At the upper station, a short rocky walk leads to Heundeulbawi — a 5-tonne boulder perched impossibly on a cliff edge that has been 'rocking' for centuries. Nearby, a Buddhist hermitage clings to the cliff face, offering a meditative moment amid the drama. On clear days, the East Sea shimmers on one side and the park's interior peaks layer endlessly on the other.
Good to know
Cable car operates daily; queues build quickly after 10 am — arrive early. Sokcho port is approximately 12 km from the cable car base; taxis and private transfers are readily available (approx. KRW 15,000–20,000 one-way). Combined with a market visit, this is an excellent half-day itinerary. Allow 2.5–3 hours total.
