Surrender to the ancient art of sunamushi — a therapeutic geothermally-heated sand bath — inside Beppu's most storied bathhouse, a Meiji-era wooden masterpiece built in 1879. Attendants bury you in warm volcanic sand as the springs' minerals melt away the tension of a sea voyage.
What to expect
Step beneath the ornate wooden façade into a fragrant, steam-warmed hall where kimono-clad attendants guide you through the sunamushi ritual. You change into a yukata robe, lie in a shallow trough, and are gently blanketed in naturally-heated volcanic sand that rises to around 50°C. After approximately 10–15 blissful minutes you emerge deeply relaxed, rinse in the indoor hot-spring bath, and emerge onto the old-town street refreshed. The combination of architecture, ritual, and therapeutic heat is entirely singular.
Good to know
Takegawara is a five-minute taxi from the port; taxis are plentiful at the terminal. The sand bath section opens at 08:00 and closes at 22:30 (last entry 22:00); mornings are quieter. Bring a small towel or purchase one on-site. Remove jewellery and avoid eating a heavy meal immediately beforehand. The entire experience takes about 45–60 minutes, leaving ample time for other excursions.
