Come face-to-face with over 1,500 wild Japanese macaques on the forested slopes of Mount Takasaki, just minutes from Beppu port — one of the largest free-roaming macaque colonies on Earth, managed with zero enclosures. A genuinely wild, deeply Japanese wildlife spectacle.
What to expect
A short monorail ride from the base station delivers you into the heart of the macaque territory on the wooded hillside. Hundreds of monkeys go about their daily social rituals within touching distance (though guests are asked not to touch) — alpha males asserting dominance, mothers nursing infants, juveniles play-fighting in the undergrowth. Expert park rangers provide feeding demonstrations and narrate troop dynamics. The forest setting, with Beppu Bay glinting below through the trees, adds a scenic dimension that elevates this well beyond a standard zoo visit.
Good to know
Takasakiyama is approximately 10 minutes by taxi from Beppu port — an easy and inexpensive transfer. The park opens at 08:30; mornings see the most active troop behaviour. The full visit, including the monorail, takes approximately 60–90 minutes — ideal as a standalone experience or paired with the Oita Marine Palace Aquarium next door. Do not bring food visibly; macaques are opportunistic and rangers advise keeping bags closed.
