Within Fukuoka's most beautiful park — built on the moat of the ancient Fukuoka Castle — a meticulously restored Japanese garden offers a private tea ceremony performed by a kimono-clad tea master amid moss, stone lanterns, and a koi-filled pond.
What to expect
Your guide leads you through the castle ruins and across the park's lake-island bridges before entering the Japanese Garden (JPY 250 admission). Inside the teahouse, you kneel on tatami as the tea master whisks matcha to a luminous green froth, narrating the wabi-sabi philosophy that underpins every movement. Afterwards, stroll the strolling garden — its seasons marked by cherry blossom, iris, and autumn maple — and explore the adjacent Maizuru Castle tower ruins for sweeping city views.
Good to know
Ohori Park is 20 min by taxi or subway from Hakata Port. Japanese Garden open 09:00–17:00 (closed Mon). Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to kneel briefly on tatami. Pre-book the full experience at least 72 hours ahead; private slots fill quickly on port days.
