Paddle deep into the Faaroa River — the only navigable river in all of French Polynesia — through a cathedral of tropical vegetation that once supplied great voyaging canoes. An utterly singular encounter with Raiatea's emerald interior that no other island in the archipelago can replicate.
What to expect
You'll launch from the lagoon's edge and glide upriver beneath a canopy of hibiscus, breadfruit trees, and towering ferns, the water mirror-calm and jade-green. Your naturalist guide explains the river's role as the lifeblood of the island's ancient civilisation, identifying flora used in traditional Polynesian medicine and navigation lore. After the river, most tours continue into the lagoon for snorkelling over coral gardens, rounding out a perfect half-day. Kayaks are stable sit-on-top models suited to all fitness levels.
