Slip beneath the surface of the warm Tongan Sea and hover alongside a 40-tonne humpback whale and her calf — one of the rarest and most profoundly moving wildlife encounters on Earth, available only July–October.
What to expect
A rigid-hull inflatable departs from the dock with your dedicated cetologist and captain, motoring to Vava'u's deep-water breeding grounds where humpbacks gather each austral winter. When a resting mother and calf are located, guests slip quietly into the water — no fins splashing, no loud entry — and float as the whales approach on their own terms. Encounters typically last 20–40 minutes with multiple dives. The guide provides real-time underwater narration via hand signals and a post-swim debrief with underwater photography. GoPro footage included.
