What to expect
The helicopter lifts off from the island's small airfield as the sun crests the horizon, flooding the basalt needles with copper light. The pilot — a Polynesian aviation veteran — narrates the mythology of each valley and peak via headset. A hover above the Vaipo Waterfall, the world's third-tallest free-falling cascade, is the flight's centrepiece. The return arc crosses the open caldera interior, revealing wild horses grazing on inaccessible ridge-tops. A cold Hinano and fresh pamplemousse await on landing.
