Climb one of Japan's only surviving original feudal castles — a brooding 1611 black-lacquered fortress — then withdraw to a riverside teahouse for a private, unhurried omoteashi matcha ceremony with a licensed tea master.
What to expect
A 45-minute scenic drive through the San'in coast brings you to Matsue, a castle town set between Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi. The five-storey tenshu (keep) displays original armour, maps, and samurai weaponry — and the panoramic top floor reveals the entire lake district. Descend to the moat-side Meimei-an, a 250-year-old thatched teahouse, where a tea practitioner guides you through the full ritual with wagashi sweets. The return journey follows the lakeside promenade.
