Sakaiminato is Japan's largest matsuba snow-crab port. A guided market tour with a local expert followed by a premium crab lunch at the Fish Center is the most authentic — and delicious — expression of what this port is truly famous for.
What to expect
The morning auction at Nakaura Fish Market is a spectacle of glistening hauls — squid, bream, and the prized matsuba crab unloaded straight from the fleet. The adjacent Sakaiminato Fish Center hosts a market hall of vendors selling live and cooked seafood; the restaurant level serves whole steamed matsuba crab with local Shimane sake. Crab season peaks October–March; summer brings fresh ika (squid) in abundance. Budget 2–3 hours for browsing and a leisurely lunch.
Good to know
A 5–10-minute walk from the cruise pier. The wholesale auction is typically early morning (06:00–08:00) — worth an early departure from ship. For a guided interpretation of the market with a local expert, add a private guide through GoWithGuide (gowithguide.com). No reservation needed for the retail hall; restaurant lunch may require advance booking in crab season.
