Stand above Japan's thundering tidal whirlpools on the Uzu-no-Michi glass-floor walkway, then descend to sea level on a sightseeing boat for a heart-pounding close encounter. A once-in-a-lifetime fusion of engineering marvel and raw natural power.
What to expect
The walkway extends 45 m out over the Naruto Strait beneath the Onaruto Bridge, with transparent panels directly above the churning vortices. On the boat, you'll feel the spray and hear the roar as currents collide at up to 20 km/h. Whirlpools peak at new and full moons — check the Uzushio tide schedule before you go. The combined visit takes around 2–2.5 hours, leaving ample time to return to port.
Good to know
Naruto is 30–40 min from Tokushima cruise pier by taxi or chartered car. Pre-check the daily whirlpool peak-time calendar at uzunomichi.jp. Book the sightseeing boat online in advance during peak season (spring/autumn). All-aboard is typically early evening — a 09:00 departure is very comfortable.
