Deep in Shikoku's mountain interior, the Iya Valley harbors ancient kazurabashi vine bridges strung across jade-green ravines — one of Japan's three most remote and storied landscapes. Pair it with a drift boat through the emerald waters of Oboke Gorge for a day of jaw-dropping, crowd-free scenery.
What to expect
The Kazurabashi bridges, woven from mountain vines and rebuilt every three years by local craftsmen, sway gently underfoot above a rushing river — a thrilling, visceral crossing. The Oboke drift boat glides through sheer limestone walls painted every shade of green and blue. Local soba or river fish at a riverside inn completes an unforgettable mountain tableau. Allow 5–6 hours for the round trip from the pier.
Good to know
Distance is approx. 70 km from Tokushima pier — plan on a full day ashore; confirm all-aboard time is no earlier than 18:00. The vine bridges are closed December–March. A chartered car with driver is strongly recommended; arrange through your licensed guide or hotel concierge in advance. Wear sturdy shoes for the vine-bridge descent path.
