Tokushima has been Japan's indigo capital for over 400 years. At Ai-No-Yakata, artisans guide you through a hands-on dyeing session using centuries-old sukumo fermented indigo — the same craft that once dressed samurai and kabuki actors. Leave with a small, uniquely personal textile you created yourself.
What to expect
You'll select a folding and binding pattern, then submerge your fabric into a vat of deep blue sukumo indigo that has been 'fed' and tended for months. Each dip and rinse reveals the pattern emerging — a genuinely meditative process. The finished piece is rinsed, dried, and yours to take aboard. The studio sits amid traditional townhouses and is beautifully photogenic. Sessions last approximately 45–60 minutes.
Good to know
Located approx. 20 min by taxi from the pier in the Kamiita area. Book ahead — sessions fill quickly and the studio is small by design. Wear clothes you don't mind splashing; aprons are provided but indigo is a committed dye. A wonderful pairing with a licensed guide tour of central Tokushima in the same half-day.
