Trek through a forested gorge just minutes from the city centre to reach Nunobiki Falls — one of Japan's three great historical waterfalls — on a peaceful, crowd-free trail that feels worlds away from urban Japan.
What to expect
The trail begins at Shin-Kobe Station (a 10-min taxi from the pier) and ascends gently through a lush gorge to the four-tiered Nunobiki Falls. The largest drop — Onodaki — thunders 43 m into a clear pool and was revered by the imperial court for over 1,000 years. Continue uphill through the Nunobiki reservoir forest to the ropeway mid-station and ascend to the Herb Gardens for panoramic harbour views, creating a natural loop. The entire circuit takes 2–3 hours at a leisurely luxury pace.
Good to know
Start early — the forest is coolest and most magical before 10:00. Trail is well-marked and accessible for moderately fit walkers; wear comfortable walking shoes. Take the ropeway down from the Herb Garden station (JPY 900) to save your knees and add a scenic gondola descent. Taxi from pier to Shin-Kobe approx JPY 1,500.
