Naoshima is Japan's extraordinary art island in the Seto Inland Sea — where Tadao Ando's minimalist architecture houses Monet originals buried underground. A private full-day immersion here is one of the most unique cultural experiences in all of Asia.
What to expect
Ferry from Uno Port to Naoshima in 20 minutes, arriving on an island where art installations inhabit renovated fishermen's houses in the Honmura district. Chichu Art Museum, built entirely below ground, houses three monumental Monet Water Lilies in rooms designed specifically for each work — light changes the experience through the day. Cycle or walk to Benesse House Museum for works by David Hockney and Bruce Nauman framed by Inland Sea views. The yellow pumpkin sculpture by Yayoi Kusama on the pier is unmissable.
Good to know
Access from Uno Port (Okayama Prefecture) — reachable by Shinkansen to Okayama then local train. Book Chichu timed-entry tickets directly on the Benesse website the moment they open (often 3 months ahead). Full day required. Return ferry and train still allows comfortable all-aboard compliance.
