Venture deep into the Chic-Choc Mountains of Gaspésie National Park — the southernmost caribou habitat in North America — for a guided alpine hike above the treeline with sweeping views of a landscape that feels genuinely wild and untouched.
What to expect
A scenic 1.5-hour drive west of Gaspé deposits you in an alpine world of rolling tundra, glacial lakes, and weather-sculpted spruce. SÉPAQ-certified naturalist guides lead small groups up to the Mont Jacques-Cartier plateau (1,268 m), where woodland caribou graze with breathtaking nonchalance a few metres from the trail. The 360-degree summit panorama — ridgeline after ridgeline fading into the Gulf horizon — is among the finest in eastern North America. Picnic lunches can be arranged through the park's reception chalet.
Good to know
Mont Jacques-Cartier summit is ~130 km from the Gaspé pier (~1.5 hrs each way) — this is a full-day commitment; confirm all-aboard time is no earlier than 7 PM before booking. Guided summit hikes run July–September; caribou sightings are most reliable in July–August. Book SÉPAQ guides at least two weeks ahead in peak season.
