Discover one of Québec's most beloved and eccentric artworks — Marcel Gagnon's monumental stone sculpture garden stretching into the St. Lawrence — where 80 life-sized figures appear to wade from the sea in a haunting, joyful procession. A true bucket-list cultural surprise.
What to expect
The sculpture garden at Sainte-Anne-des-Monts (~100 km west of Gaspé) lines the shoreline with Gagnon's stone-and-driftwood figures — each unique, many contributed by local families — processing in endless silent ceremony from the Gulf toward the mainland. At low tide you can walk among them in the shallows. Gagnon himself has been known to receive visitors in his adjacent studio, offering rare direct insight into a career spanning five decades. Pair the visit with lunch at a nearby riverside restaurant serving locally smoked salmon and pêcheur-style seafood chowder.
Good to know
Sainte-Anne-des-Monts is ~1 hr west of Gaspé by private vehicle — pre-arrange a bilingual driver-guide for the best experience and seamless commentary en route. Low tide timing greatly enhances the sculpture walk; check tide tables before you go. A half-day combined with Forillon makes a superb full-day itinerary.
